How Superannuation works in Australia

Superannuation is Australia's compulsory retirement savings system. Your employer contributes 11.5% of your salary (the Super Guarantee) on top of your pay. You can add extra through salary sacrifice (before-tax) or personal after-tax contributions. Concessional (before-tax) contributions are taxed at 15% inside super (30% if your income exceeds $250,000 under Division 293). The annual concessional cap is $30,000 — exceeding it incurs additional tax. Non-concessional (after-tax) contributions up to $120,000 per year are tax-free entering super. Investment earnings are taxed at just 15% in the accumulation phase, and withdrawals are tax-free from age 60. Low-income earners may qualify for the government co-contribution (up to $500) and the Low Income Super Tax Offset (up to $500).
