How Australian income tax works in 2026/27

Your take-home pay (net pay) is what remains after tax and other deductions from your gross salary. Australia uses a progressive tax system with the Stage 3 tax cuts now in effect: 0% on the first $18,200 (tax-free threshold), 16% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy (2%) funds Australia's public healthcare system, with low-income exemptions available. Superannuation is contributed by your employer on top of your salary at the 2026/27 Super Guarantee rate of 11.5% — it's additional compensation toward your retirement.

Understanding your results

Income Tax is calculated progressively — each dollar is only taxed at the rate for the bracket it falls in, not your entire income at the top rate. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) reduces tax for low-to-middle income earners by up to $700, phasing out above $45,000. Superannuation is shown as an additional employer contribution (not deducted from your salary). The Total Employment Cost represents the full cost to your employer including super guarantee contributions.

Medicare Levy and exemptions

The Medicare Levy is 2% of your taxable income. If you earn below the low-income threshold ($24,276 for 2026/27), you're exempt from the levy. There's also a gradual phase-in for incomes between the threshold and approximately $30,000. This calculator applies the full 2% levy above the exemption threshold for simplicity.

HELP/HECS debt repayments

If you have a HELP (formerly HECS) student loan debt, compulsory repayments start once your income exceeds the minimum repayment threshold ($55,000 for 2026/27). The repayment rate increases with income from 1% to 10%. This calculator uses a simplified 2% rate on income above the threshold — actual repayments may vary based on your total HELP debt and precise income.
