How self assessment works

You must file a Self Assessment tax return if you're self-employed, a company director, have untaxed income above £1,000, or need to claim certain reliefs. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Returns must be filed online by 31 January following the end of the tax year, with any tax due paid by the same date. Payments on account may be required if your tax bill exceeds £1,000.
