What is sneakflation?
Sneakflation (also called quality inflation) occurs when manufacturers reduce the quality of a product while keeping the price the same — or even raising it. Instead of shrinking the package, they use cheaper ingredients, thinner materials, or lower-grade components. Examples include lower thread count in bedding, reduced milk fat in dairy products, cheaper packaging, or smaller portions in restaurants. This calculator adjusts prices for quality changes to reveal the true inflation rate.
Example: A cereal box stays at $10 but the quality score drops from 8/10 to 6/10. The quality-adjusted price went from $1.25 to $1.67 per quality point — a 33% true inflation rate, even though the price never changed.
