What is skimpflation?
Skimpflation is a form of hidden inflation where businesses reduce the quality of service while maintaining or increasing prices. Unlike shrinkflation (smaller packages) or sneakflation (lower quality ingredients), skimpflation affects services — like restaurants with fewer waitstaff, hotels with less frequent housekeeping, airlines charging more for less legroom, or streaming services with more ads. This calculator measures value scores based on ratings relative to cost to show how much service quality has declined.
Example: A streaming service used to cost $10/month with a 9/10 rating (value score 0.900) but now costs $15/month with a 6/10 rating (value score 0.400). That's a 55.6% drop in value, with a 50% price increase.
