Jamaica Personal Income Tax Guide (PAYE)

Jamaica's Individual Income Tax (IIT) is collected through PAYE (Pay As You Earn) with a progressive three-bracket structure from 0% to 30%. The tax year is the calendar year (January–December), and the administering authority is Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).

Jamaica's Individual Income Tax (IIT) is administered by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). Employees pay through PAYE withholding, while self-employed individuals file annual returns. For related guidance, see our Corporate Tax Guide →, GCT Guide →, and Social Contributions Guide →.

PAYE Tax Brackets 2026

Jamaica uses a progressive three-bracket system on taxable income (gross income minus deductions and allowances):

  • 0% — on the first JMD 1,500,000 of annual taxable income (JMD 125,000/month threshold)
  • 25% — on taxable income from JMD 1,500,001 to JMD 6,000,000
  • 30% — on taxable income above JMD 6,000,001

The first JMD 1.5 million of annual income is tax-free. This is effectively a basic personal allowance built into the PAYE withholding tables rather than a separate deduction.

PAYE Withholding (Employer-Filed)

  • Monthly withholding: Employers deduct PAYE from each salary payment based on TAJ tax tables.
  • Threshold per pay period: JMD 125,000 per month (approximately JMD 28,846 per week or JMD 57,692 per fortnight).
  • Employer obligation: Remit PAYE to TAJ by the 15th of the following month.
  • Tax credit: A statutory PAYE tax credit of up to JMD 80,076 per year (2026) is applied automatically through the withholding tables.

Social Contributions Withheld via PAYE

The following contributions are deducted alongside PAYE and remitted by the employer:

  • NIS (National Insurance Scheme): Employee 3%, Employer 3.5% — capped at JMD 3,500,000 per year insurable earnings.
  • NHT (National Housing Trust): Employee 2%, Employer 3% — capped at JMD 6,000,000 per year.
  • Education Tax: Employee 2%, Employer 3.5% — uncapped.

Deductions and Reliefs

  • National Insurance Scheme (NIS): Employee contributions are deductible for income tax purposes.
  • National Housing Trust (NHT): Employee contributions are deductible.
  • Retirement/pension contributions: Contributions to approved pension plans and superannuation funds are deductible up to specified limits.
  • Medical expenses: Qualifying medical expenses may be deductible for self-employed individuals.

Self-Employed Individuals

  • Self-employed persons file annual income tax returns and pay IIT directly to TAJ.
  • The same progressive rates (0%, 25%, 30%) apply to net business income after allowable deductions.
  • Self-employed individuals must also pay NIS (Class 1 or 3) and Education Tax on their earnings.
  • Estimated tax payments may be required quarterly if the annual liability exceeds a threshold.
