How UK pensions work

The UK pension system has two main pillars: the State Pension (a flat-rate payment from the government) and private pensions (workplace and personal/SIPP contributions). You can access most private pensions from age 55 (rising to 57 in 2028). You can take up to 25% of your pension pot as a tax-free lump sum, with the remainder used to provide income through drawdown or an annuity.
