How Swiss Salary & Tax Works

Switzerland uses a 3-tier tax system applied to your gross salary. First, social insurance deductions (AHV/IV/EO at 5.3%, ALV unemployment at 1.1% up to CHF 148k, NBU accident at ~1.3%, and BVG occupational pension at 3.5–9% depending on age) are subtracted. Then direct federal tax is levied at progressive rates (0%–13.2%) on the remaining taxable income, with a flat 11.5% above CHF 794,100. Finally, cantonal and communal taxes vary significantly by canton — from ~7% in Zug and Schwyz to ~15% in Basel-Stadt.
