What is a pip in forex?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price move in a currency pair. For most pairs like EUR/USD, one pip equals 0.0001. For Japanese yen pairs like USD/JPY, one pip equals 0.01. Understanding pip values is essential for calculating position size and managing risk — every trader should know the dollar value of a pip before entering a trade.
Why position sizing matters
Position sizing is the most underrated risk management tool in forex. A common rule is to risk no more than 1–2% of your account on a single trade. This calculator uses your account balance, risk percentage, stop loss in pips, and the pip value to determine the exact lot size that keeps your risk within your comfort zone. Without proper position sizing, a single losing trade can wipe out weeks of gains.
How it works: Enter your account balance, choose your currency pair, set your stop loss in pips and risk percentage. The calculator computes the pip value in your account currency, then determines the position size (in standard, mini, and micro lots) that keeps your risk at the target level. The risk table shows position sizes at 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% risk for quick comparison.
