How options P/L works at expiry
An option's value at expiration comes from its intrinsic value — the difference between the underlying price and the strike price (for in-the-money options). Out-of-the-money options expire worthless. Your total P/L is the intrinsic value minus the premium you paid (for long positions) or the premium you collected minus the intrinsic value (for short positions).
Key concepts: The breakeven price is where P/L equals zero. Max profit for long calls is theoretically unlimited (stock can rise indefinitely). Max loss for short calls is unlimited. Long puts and short puts have limited risk and reward tied to the strike price.
