How Wealth Tax Works in Norway
Norway's formuesskatt (wealth tax) is an annual tax on net wealth. It consists of two components: a state wealth tax of 0.30% and a municipal wealth tax of 0.15%, for a combined rate of 0.45%. The tax applies to net wealth exceeding NOK 1,700,000 (2026). A 75% discount applies to primary residences, meaning only 25% of the primary residence value counts toward taxable wealth. Other assets (secondary homes, investment properties, shares, bank deposits) are generally included at full market value, while debt is deductible.

Step 2: All other assets (secondary properties, shares, bank deposits, etc.) at full value minus debt = taxable net wealth.
Step 3: Subtract threshold of NOK 1,700,000.
Step 4: Apply 0.30% state tax + 0.15% municipal tax on the excess.
