How estate distribution works
Your net estate is what remains after funeral/administration costs and debts are subtracted from the total estate value. If the net estate exceeds the estate tax exemption, the excess is subject to estate tax. The distributable estate — what your heirs actually receive — is the net estate minus estate tax. You can split this among beneficiaries by percentage or fixed dollar amounts.
Key insight: The US federal estate tax exemption for 2026 is approximately $13.99 million per individual. Many states also impose their own estate tax with lower exemption thresholds. This tool helps you model different scenarios to minimize tax and maximize what your heirs receive.
