How French TVA works in 2026

VAT in France is called Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutée (TVA). The standard rate is 20%, applied to most goods and services. An intermediate rate of 10% applies to restaurant meals, transport, and renovation work. A reduced rate of 5.5% applies to food, energy, books, and medical equipment. A super-reduced rate of 2.1% applies to newspapers, prescription drugs covered by social security, and the TV license fee. Businesses collect TVA on behalf of the tax authority (Direction Générale des Finances Publiques) and can reclaim input TVA (TVA déductible) on their own business purchases.

VAT Breakdown

Franchise en base (Small Business Exemption)

If your annual turnover is below €91,900 (goods) or €36,800 (services), you may qualify for the franchise en base regime. You do not charge TVA to your customers and you are exempt from VAT returns. However, you also cannot recover input VAT (TVA déductible) on your business purchases. Auto-entrepreneurs under the micro-BIC regime also benefit from simplified social and tax declarations.

Understanding your results

Net to Gross (HT → TTC): Enter the net amount (HT, hors taxe) to calculate how much TVA is added and the total gross amount (TTC, toutes taxes comprises). Gross to Net (TTC → HT): Enter the total gross amount (TTC) to extract the TVA and find the underlying net amount (HT). Reverse Charge (TVA intracommunautaire): In B2B cross-border transactions within the EU, the VAT liability shifts to the recipient — the supplier invoices without TVA.
