Founded in 2000. Lists regional banks (Emirates NBD, Dubai Islamic Bank), real estate (Emaar Properties, DAMAC), and services (Aramex, Dubai Taxi).
DFM General Index: Tracks DFM-listed companies. No capital gains tax for individual investors.
Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX)
Larger than DFM by market cap. Lists energy (ADNOC companies, TAQA), financials (First Abu Dhabi Bank FAB, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank ADCB), telecoms (e& formerly Etisalat), and holdings companies (International Holding Company IHC, Alpha Dhabi).
FTSE ADX Index: FTSE-constructed 15 largest ADX companies.
In 2021-2023, ADX saw massive IPOs from ADNOC group companies (ADNOC Drilling, ADNOC Logistics, Borouge) and privatizations, driving significant market growth.
NASDAQ Dubai
International exchange listing structured finance products, sukuk, bonds, and ETFs. USD-denominated.
Tax Framework
- Zero Personal Income Tax: No tax on salary, dividends, or capital gains.
- Zero Capital Gains Tax: For individuals investing in UAE or foreign securities.
- Zero Dividend Tax: No withholding tax on UAE company dividends.
- Corporate Tax: 9% introduced in June 2023 for taxable profits exceeding AED 375,000. Free zone companies may maintain 0% if they meet qualifying criteria.
- VAT: 5% (not on investment transactions).
- Estate and Inheritance Tax: None at the federal level. Some Emirates may have local inheritance rules for non-Muslims.
Free Zone Company Investing
Many investors set up free zone companies (Dubai International Financial Centre DIFC, Abu Dhabi Global Market ADGM) for international investing. These offer:
- 100% foreign ownership
- 0% corporate tax under qualifying conditions
- Common law legal framework (particularly DIFC and ADGM)
- No currency controls (AED is pegged to USD at 3.6725)

Dubai's real estate market offers freehold ownership in designated areas:
- Freehold Zones: Foreigners can buy freehold property in areas like Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, Downtown, Emirates Hills. No property tax. 4% transfer fee (paid once at purchase).
- Leasehold: 99-year leases in non-freehold areas.
- ROI: Typical gross rental yields: 5-8% in Dubai, 4-6% in Abu Dhabi.
- VAT on Rent: 5% on residential rent (commercial: 5%).
- Capital appreciation: Abu Dhabi's real estate market is less speculative than Dubai's and offers steadier, often institutional-grade returns. Dubai's market is cyclical.
