Slovakia Cryptocurrency Tax Guide 2026 — Income or Capital Gains at IIT 19%/25%
Cryptocurrency in Slovakia is treated as other income or capital gains and taxed at standard IIT rates of 19% (up to ~EUR 47K) and 25% (above). Mining is considered business income if conducted systematically. Record-keeping is essential for calculating gains and losses.
Slovakia has specific cryptocurrency tax guidance issued by the Financial Administration. Crypto transactions are generally treated as either other income (for occasional investors) or business income (for systematic traders and miners). Capital gains from crypto are aggregated with other income and taxed at personal income tax rates. VAT does not apply to crypto-to-fiat conversions but may apply to goods and services purchased with crypto.
Tax Treatment by Activity
- Occasional trading: Gains classified as other income — taxed at IIT 19%/25%. Losses cannot be offset against other income
- Systematic trading (business): Considered business income — taxed at IIT rates with full deduction of related expenses. Social and health insurance contributions apply
- Mining: Business income if systematic and profit-oriented. Electricity, hardware, and other costs are deductible
- Staking / lending: Income from staking or lending crypto is treated as other income or business income depending on frequency and scale
- Airdrops / forks: Taxable as other income at fair market value at the time of receipt
Record Keeping
Taxpayers must maintain detailed records including: dates of acquisition and disposal, amounts in EUR, fair market value at transaction time, exchange or platform used, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, and purpose (personal vs. business). The Financial Administration may request this information in audits. Records should be maintained for at least 10 years.
FAQs
Do I pay tax on crypto-to-crypto trades?
Yes. Each crypto-to-crypto trade is a taxable event. You must calculate the gain or loss in EUR based on the fair market value at the time of each trade. Gains are added to your other income and taxed at IIT rates.
Is there a holding period exemption for crypto?
No. Unlike property (5-year exemption), there is no specific holding period exemption for cryptocurrency. However, the EUR 500 exemption for securities does not apply to crypto gains either.
Are losses from crypto deductible?
For occasional investors (other income), losses cannot be offset. For systematic traders (business income), losses can be deducted against business income.
