Singapore Personal Income Tax Guide (IIT)
Singapore's Individual Income Tax (IIT) uses a progressive rate system from 0% to 24% across 13 brackets. The first SGD 20,000 of chargeable income is tax-free. Generous personal reliefs — earned income, CPF contributions, parent/handicapped parent, child, handicapped sibling, course fees, and foreign maid levy — significantly lower tax liability. IRAS administers the tax on a territorial basis. All amounts in SGD.
Singapore's Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) administers a territorial tax system — only income derived from or remitted into Singapore is taxed. For related guidance, see our Corporate Tax Guide →, GST Guide →, and Investment Income Guide →.
IIT Tax Brackets 2026 (Chargeable Income)
Singapore applies progressive rates on chargeable income (assessable income minus personal reliefs):
- 0% — on the first SGD 20,000
- 2% — on SGD 20,001 to SGD 30,000
- 3.5% — on SGD 30,001 to SGD 40,000
- 7% — on SGD 40,001 to SGD 80,000
- 11.5% — on SGD 80,001 to SGD 120,000
- 15% — on SGD 120,001 to SGD 160,000
- 18% — on SGD 160,001 to SGD 200,000
- 19% — on SGD 200,001 to SGD 240,000
- 19.5% — on SGD 240,001 to SGD 280,000
- 20% — on SGD 280,001 to SGD 320,000
- 22% — on SGD 320,001 to SGD 500,000
- 23% — on SGD 500,001 to SGD 1,000,000
- 24% — on SGD 1,000,001 and above
The top marginal rate of 24% applies to chargeable income exceeding SGD 1 million. Singapore's brackets are among the most progressive in Asia, while remaining highly competitive.
Personal Reliefs
Reliefs are claimed against assessable income (before calculating chargeable income). The total relief cap per individual is SGD 80,000 (except for course fees and foreign maid levy which are excluded from the cap).
- Earned Income Relief: Up to SGD 1,000 (age below 55), SGD 6,000 (age 55–59), SGD 10,000 (age 60+). Automatically granted to all employees and self-employed persons with earned income.
- CPF Relief: Full amount of mandatory CPF employee contributions (20% of ordinary wages, up to SGD 37,740 per year). Self-employed persons may claim relief on Medisave contributions.
- Parent Relief: Up to SGD 9,000 per qualifying parent/grandparent (SGD 14,000 if handicapped). Must live in same household or dependant's income below SGD 4,000.
- Child Relief: SGD 4,000 per qualifying child (up to four children). Handicapped child relief: SGD 7,500 per child. For married women, working mother's child relief (WMCR) is also available.
- Handicapped Sibling Relief: SGD 5,500 per handicapped sibling who lives with the taxpayer.
- Course Fees Relief: Up to SGD 5,500 for approved courses leading to academic, professional, or trade qualifications.
- Foreign Maid Levy Relief: Up to SGD 3,780 per year (two foreign maids) — 50% of the levy paid.
- NSman Relief: SGD 1,500–3,500 depending on rank and involvement in national service activities.
- Life Insurance Relief: For taxpayers with less than SGD 5,000 in CPF contributions — the lower of actual premiums paid or 7% of insured capital.
Tax Rebates
- The Singapore government occasionally grants one-off tax rebates as part of the annual Budget. For 2026, a 50% personal income tax rebate (capped at SGD 200) has been announced.
- The rebate applies to tax payable after all reliefs and is credited automatically. It is non-refundable (cannot create a negative tax liability).
Territorial Taxation
- Only income accrued in or derived from Singapore and foreign income remitted into Singapore is taxable. Foreign-sourced income that is not remitted is generally not taxed (except in specific cases for partnerships).
- Tax residents are taxed on a territorial basis, not on worldwide income. This is a key distinction from most other jurisdictions.
Filing & Payment
- Year of assessment (YA): Tax is assessed on income earned in the preceding calendar year. For example, YA 2026 taxes income from 2025.
- Filing deadline: 15 April (paper filing) or 18 April (e-filing via myTax Portal). IRAS automatically issues a Notice of Assessment after filing.
- Payment: Due within 30 days of the Notice of Assessment. Instalment plans are available for amounts exceeding SGD 2,000.
