IRD Guide — Inland Revenue Department Services and Compliance in NZ
the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) in New Zealand. The guide covers the IRD services (the myIR online portal, the phone, the in-person), the IRD number (the "IRD number"), the customer support, and the common forms and the publications for the taxpayers.
IRD Services and myIR
The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is the government agency responsible for the tax collection and the administration. The myIR is the online portal providing the 24/7 access to the tax information. The myIR allows the taxpayers to: (a) file the tax returns (the IR3, the IR4, the IR6, the IR7), (b) view the tax account and the transaction history, (c) file the GST returns, (d) manage the student loan account, (e) manage the Working for Families credits, (f) set up the payment plans, (g) update the personal details (the name, the address, the bank account), and (h) communicate with the IRD through the secure messages.
IRD Number
The IRD number is the unique tax identification number assigned to the individuals and the entities in New Zealand. The IRD number is required for: (a) the employment (the employer needs the IRD number to process the PAYE at the correct rate), (b) the bank accounts (the RWT rate election on the interest), (c) the KiwiSaver (the membership and the contributions), (d) the student loan (the borrowing and the repayment), (e) the business registration (the GST, the employer, the provisional tax), and (f) the tax return filing. The IRD number can be obtained through the myIR or the IRD application form (the IR595).
