Namibia Tax Filing Guide 2026
Namibia's tax filing system is managed through the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) online portal. The tax year runs from 1 March to 28 February. Provisional taxpayers (self-employed and companies) pay estimated tax in two instalments by 30 June and 28 February. Annual tax returns must be filed by 30 June following the tax year end. All taxpayers must register with NamRA and obtain a tax registration number. Penalties apply for late filing and late payment.
Overview β Tax Filing in Namibia
The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) operates an online tax administration system for all tax filings, payments, and compliance management. Taxpayers register on the NamRA portal, obtain a tax registration number, and file all returns electronically. The system covers income tax (individual and corporate), VAT, PAYE, withholding taxes, and other levies. NamRA has modernised its systems in recent years to improve taxpayer services and compliance. The tax year for individuals and most companies runs from 1 March to 28 February (following the South African tax year convention).
Tax Registration Number
A tax registration number is mandatory for all taxpayers in Namibia β individuals, companies, partnerships, trusts, and other entities. To obtain a tax number, register on the NamRA portal with valid identification (passport, national ID, or business registration certificate). A tax number is required for many transactions including opening a bank account, registering property, importing/exporting goods, and obtaining business permits. Companies must have a tax number before they can operate legally in Namibia.
Filing Deadlines
Different taxpayers have different filing deadlines in Namibia:
- Individual taxpayers β annual return by 30 June following the tax year end (28 February)
- Provisional taxpayers (self-employed, businesses) β first provisional payment due 30 June, second due 28 February, annual return by 30 June
- Companies β annual return within 6 months of financial year end
- PAYE (employers) β monthly return by the 15th of the following month
- VAT β bi-monthly return by the 25th of the month following the VAT period
- Withholding tax β monthly return by the 15th of the following month
Late filing attracts penalties and interest at 10% per annum on any unpaid tax. More severe penalties apply for failure to file after NamRA notices.
Provisional Tax System
Provisional taxpayers (self-employed individuals, companies, and persons with investment income not subject to PAYE) must estimate their annual tax liability and pay in two instalments:
- First instalment β due 30 June (50% of estimated total tax)
- Second instalment β due 28 February (remaining 50%, adjusted for actual income)
A third top-up payment may be required if the estimated tax was significantly understated. Underpayment of provisional tax attracts interest at 10% per annum. The final tax liability is reconciled when the annual return is filed by 30 June.
