Malawi's tax filing system is managed through the Malawi Revenue Authority's (MRA) online portal (MRA e-Services). Quarterly instalment payments are required for taxpayers with significant tax liabilities. All taxpayers must obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN). Penalties apply for late filing and late payment.
Overview β Tax Filing in Malawi
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) operates an integrated online tax administration system (MRA e-Services) for all tax filings, payments, and compliance management. Taxpayers register on the MRA portal, obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN), and file all returns electronically. The system covers income tax (personal and corporate), VAT, PAYE, withholding taxes, and other levies.
Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN)
A TPIN is mandatory for all taxpayers in Malawi β individuals, companies, partnerships, trusts, and other entities. To obtain a TPIN, register on the MRA portal with valid identification. A TPIN is required for many transactions including opening a bank account, registering land, importing/exporting goods, and obtaining a business permit.
Filing Deadlines
The tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June. Key filing deadlines include:
- Self-employed individuals β annual return by 31 December following the tax year end
- Companies β annual return within 6 months of year-end (by 31 December for June year-end)
- PAYE (employers) β monthly return by the 14th of the following month
- VAT β monthly return by the 14th of the following month
- Withholding tax β monthly return by the 14th of the following month

Self-Assessment & Quarterly Instalments
Self-employed individuals and companies must estimate their annual tax liability and pay in quarterly instalments. If the actual tax computed in the annual return exceeds the total instalments paid, the balance is due at the time of filing.
MRA e-Services Portal
The MRA e-Services portal allows taxpayers to register for TPIN and tax types, file annual and periodic returns, make tax payments, view tax history, request Tax Clearance Certificates, and apply for treaty relief.
