Honduras Tax Filing Guide 2026
Honduras's tax filing system is managed through the Servicio de Administración de Rentas (SAR) online portal. Self-employed individuals and companies must file annual returns by 31 March. Quarterly instalment payments are due by 15 March, 15 June, 15 September, and 15 December. All taxpayers must obtain a Registro Tributario Nacional (RTN). Penalties apply for late filing and late payment.
Overview — Tax Filing in Honduras
The Servicio de Administración de Rentas (SAR) operates an integrated online tax administration system for all tax filings, payments, and compliance management. Taxpayers register on the SAR portal, obtain a Registro Tributario Nacional (RTN), and file all returns electronically. The system covers income tax (ISR), VAT (ISV), withholding taxes, and other levies. SAR has been modernising its systems to improve taxpayer services and compliance monitoring.
Registro Tributario Nacional (RTN)
An RTN (Registro Tributario Nacional) is mandatory for all taxpayers in Honduras — individuals, companies, partnerships, and other entities. The RTN is a unique alphanumeric identifier. To obtain an RTN, register on the SAR portal with valid identification (identity card or passport for individuals, incorporation documents for companies). An RTN is required for many transactions including opening a bank account, registering property, importing/exporting goods, and obtaining business permits. Companies must have an RTN before they can operate legally in Honduras.
Filing Deadlines
Different taxpayers have different filing deadlines in Honduras:
- Self-employed individuals — annual return by 31 March of the following year
- Companies — annual return by 31 March of the following year
- ISR withholding (employers) — monthly return by the 15th of the following month
- ISV (VAT) — monthly return by the 15th of the following month
- Withholding tax — monthly return by the 15th of the following month
Late filing attracts penalties and interest. SAR imposes fines based on the taxpayer's income bracket and the duration of the delay.
Self-Assessment & Quarterly Instalments
Self-employed individuals and companies must estimate their annual tax liability and pay in quarterly instalments:
- First instalment — due 15 March (25% of estimated tax)
- Second instalment — due 15 June (25% of estimated tax)
- Third instalment — due 15 September (25% of estimated tax)
- Fourth instalment — due 15 December (25% of estimated tax)
If the actual tax computed in the annual return exceeds the total instalments paid, the balance is due at the time of filing. If instalments exceed the actual tax, a refund may be claimed. Underpayment of instalments attracts interest.
SAR Online Portal
The SAR online portal allows taxpayers to register for RTN and tax types, file annual and periodic returns, make tax payments (via bank transfer or online), view tax history, request tax clearance certificates, and track refund applications. Taxpayers can access the portal at www.sar.gob.hn. Registration requires a valid email address and identity document. All records are stored digitally.
Penalties & Enforcement
SAR has enforcement powers under the Código Tributario. Key penalties include late filing fines, late payment interest at 1% per month, failure to maintain records, tax evasion penalties up to 100% of evaded tax plus criminal prosecution, and failure to register for tax. SAR may issue garnishment notices to banks, seize assets, or initiate legal proceedings. Tax clearance certificates may be denied to non-compliant taxpayers.
