Bahrain Personal Tax Guide 2026

Bahrain imposes zero personal income tax on individuals. Whether you are a resident or a non-resident, employment income, self-employment earnings, and investment returns are all tax-free.

Personal Income Tax Rate

0% — Bahrain has no personal income tax. There is no tax on salaries, wages, bonuses, commissions, or any other employment compensation. Self-employed individuals also pay 0% income tax.

Social Insurance Contributions

While there is no income tax, employed Bahraini nationals contribute 6% of salary (up to BHD 4,000/month) to SIO social insurance. Expatriates do not pay social insurance but employers pay a 1% work injury premium and a BHD 60/month LMRA fee.

Tax-Free Investment Income

Dividends, interest, capital gains, and rental income are all tax-free for individuals. There is no withholding tax on any payments to individuals.

Residency by Investment (RE Visa)

Bahrain offers a residency-by-investment visa for property purchasers (minimum BHD 50,000 in real estate). RE visa holders enjoy the same 0% tax regime as citizens and standard residents. After 183 days' presence, they qualify as tax residents and can obtain a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC).

Filing Requirements

Individuals have no tax filing obligations in Bahrain. There is no annual return for personal income. Only businesses registered for VAT must file quarterly returns.

Dual Residency & DTTs

Bahrain has over 40 double tax treaties. If you are a resident of another country, those countries may tax your worldwide income, but Bahrain will not. The RE visa, combined with 183+ days in Bahrain, typically establishes tax residency under most DTT tie-breaker rules.
